Doing a lot of amateur photography and having a large music collection, I searched everywhere for a good capacity high speed drive that was comfortable to carry without being bulky. This is by far the best I own. It’s silent, very very fast and doesn’t get too hot like another pocket USB drive I bought. I use it with my Macbook Pro on Firewire 800 and the speed is just incredible. Well worth the investment of a couple of extra quid for the perfect product. Highly recommended.

What can you say about a floppy disc drive! This one worked straight out of the box. Brilliant! I ran out of storage on my old 60gb external drive. This plugged straight into my pc laptop USB and worked right away. A nice little blue light comes on to tell you it’s happy! I also plugged it into my Apple Mac and again I could read and write data to it immediately as it comes already formatted in FAT32 format. Well worth the money if storage is all you’re after.

This is a great product from Buffalo, so much so I decided to write my first review of a piece of hardware. In the past I’ve spent money on cheaper external hard drives and have been dissapointed with everyone due to problems with the connection and quality of the design/build. This hard drive is simple to use and very sleek. It doesn’t force you to use some BS software already on the hard drive, it’s simple drag and drop. You won’t find a better hard drive, this is a 10 out of 10 (and I’m usually very picky about hardware!)

Most definitely recommended!

I purchased this hard drive with a view to using it instead of the Time Capsule that I purchased with my iMac and is now full. The Hard drive came out of the box, plugged it in, configured it to be the new Time Capsule and away it went. It now just backs up the entire machine on a continuous basis. Great purchase.

There is a piece of software that can "touch" the drive every 9 minutes in order to keep it spinning but this shouldn't have to be solved by a third party solution. Purchased this considerably cheaper from a high street retailer which I was surprised by.
Oddly, the Western Digital SmartWare software doesn’t appear to be compatible with this HDD (as per the official word anyway) and does not let you access the power features, so, because of this it spins down every 10 minutes and when it’s being used as a Time Machine backup, it’s a pain in the backside. There is a piece of software that can “touch” the drive every 9 minutes in order to keep it spinning but this shouldn’t have to be solved by a third party solution. Power saving features should *never* be engraved into the firmware!

Otherwise, it’s quiet and there’s no vibrations either thanks to the rubber feet!

4 Stars because of the stupid power saving firmware.

No buttons to press. Just plug it in and its recognised as a hardrive. It is much smaller than I was expecting, and looks very nice & subtle. It has a blue light which blinks when it is doing stuff. It is very very quiet (you can feel it hum in your hand if you hold it, but there is no fan or anything within it). You can drag stuff over to it to copy folders etc like a normal hardrive.

It has a folder called Samsungsoftware on the hardrive which contains the backup software if you wish to use it, called SamsungAutoSetup.exe This will install the backup programme on your pc. It is actually Clarus IntelliStor Scheduler Service software. It works well. The only issue you might have is allowing your anti-virus protection programme / firewall to allow the software to work.

I’m glad I went for the Samsung as it’s a brand I trust – I have samsung hardrives in my pc which have never let me down, and it is a sexy looking number, not a big ugly box. Easy to carry it around eg to work if you need to copy stuff.

After 2 months of working perfectly, unit failed, computer could not see drive, after correctly disconnecting unit, (after use).
So called 3 year warranty on packaging and advertised, NOT VALID, as seller was not official Samsung retailer.
Warning to buyers, ensure any warranty is more than some writing on side of packet.
Very disappointed with a brand name breaking-down so soon, with a minimum amount of usage.
